During the previous year, 20.4% of viewership time was spent on pay-TV alternatives, practically 2 percentage points more than in 2015. According to an analysis released by Barlovento Comunicación, this figure is the greatest ever reached by pay-TV channels, with Spaniards generally choosing free-to-air (FTA) TELEVISION.

And there is no doubt that audience figures are straight driven by an increasing number of subscribers. Inning accordance with current reports, Spain’s pay-TV is going through its most expansive duration ever, growing over 9% year-on-year and reaching 5.84 million households by June 2016, the majority of which have IPTV services.

“The quick expansion of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks together with the increasing competitors amongst telcos– Movistar, Vodafone and Orange– has actually driven pay-TV intake,” stated the report.

Regarding channels, FOX has been the most watched network throughout 2016, collecting 6.4% of the total pay-TV viewership. BeIN La Liga is second, followed by the movie and series channels TNT, AXN and Canal Hollywood.

Pay-TV figures are still far below those for FTA. There are no pay-TV agents among the 50 most seen broadcasts of 2016, all which come from Atresmedia, Mediaset and the general public broadcaster RTVE.
